It is an unforgettable week, from 12-18th of September ,2010. I have been learning chinese medicine for years, this is the first time that I traveled abroad to treat patients .Before setting off to Manila, there was a tragic hostage crisis, HKSAR government has hosted the black Outbound Travel Alert. Though Infanta is a small and tranquility town, my family didn't show their support in my trip to Philippines, that makes me feel nervous.
After 5 hours traffic from Manila to Infanta, we arrived at the house at 10pm already. ICDAI arranged everything for us in a nice way, I slept very well at the first night and my anxiety was vanished.
At the following 5 days, the schedule was tight. Every morning, we went to hospital and home visit. In the afternoon, we started the treatment at the clinic. We set off at 9am and back to house at 10pm.Everyday is a busy day but everyday is fruitful and meaningful.
One most unforgettable patient is a girl with meningitis. This week we had permission of hospital, so we could go to hospital for the service. When we saw this little girl, she was lack of vitality and confused. After the diagnosis, one of our senior doctor thought should gave her tang. As it is an urgent case, so we brew the herbal tea for her and let her drink the medicine as soon as possible. After we completed the clinic section, we brought the medicine for her. Maybe the medicine was bitter, she refused to drink. We and girl’s grandmother use all our means to feed her. Finally, she drunk one third of medicine, and we did tuna. We stayed at hospital until 10pm, we were all very tired. Though we did not see her get better, it is a very valuable experience for me. Even when we came across the emergency case, we could still help lot in the Chinese medicine field.
Later, the girl drunk all the medicine, she was still constipated, but a lot of gas released and became conscious.
Another young man got pneumonia, after prescribed him a dose of tang, he has recovered. I saw a lot of real cases that showed the power of Chinese medicine. The deep–rooted thinking of slow healing efficacy of Chinese medicine should be brokethrough.
In these 5 days, Shek and I mainly did acupuncture for patients. I came across some thorny cases, too. For example, I met a girl who was lack of strength of lower limbs and had difficult extension in hip and knee joint. Since western medicine doctor cannot find the reason. So there was nothing could help her. I diagnosis her as cold and dampness stagnation in meridian, so I did acupuncture for her twice .Her back pain was improved, but her limbs still spasm .The day before I left, she came back for follow-up, I could find any better treatment method. It is not a successful case, but it is a driving force for me to keep on learning.
I feel so glad that I can attend this service trip. No pay, no gain. This was a very busy and tired trip. But what I have gained is much more than I paid.
